Coffee! Like a minion following a banana, I accompanied my family following the scent of the coffee to Kodagu (Coorg) district in Karnataka. Before I got there, I had no clue that Kodagu is only an administrative district. The district place is Madikeri and there are other talukas like Virajpet.
The journey along the west coast of India on the Konkan Railway tracks was quite an experience in itself. It was lush green all along the route. We saw rivers filled to the brim and flowing steadily towards the west. When you see this beauty of nature, strangely enough, you marvel at the feat of engineering that the Konkan Railway is! After all, it is this railway that brought the nature closer to us.

Konkan!!!
The Club Mahindra resort at Madikeri is quite beautiful. It is built in the local style — AinMane. AinMane means ancestral home. There is plenty of activities to do in the resort. The best thing about the resort though is that they have tried to blend in with the surrounding natural area. As a result, there are countless birds in the vicinity. I will most fondly remember the whistling birds who came near the balcony in the morning.

Oh whistling bird! Where art thou?
There are many places worth visiting around this area. Though the distances are short, it takes some time to drive to most of the places. Coorg is one of the rare places where the journey and the destination are equally rewarding.

Coffee grows aplenty here. Also the local coffee is delicious. This makes coorg a must visit for any coffee afficionado.

Best time to visit — Winter. Early or late monsoon when the rain gods are not going crazy is also a good time. But monsoon means that all the nearby National Parks are closed. Avoid during summers.
Food — Coorgi cuisine is quite spicy and tasty. Definitely worth trying. Coorgi chicken.
Languages spoken — Kannada, Hindi, and English.
How we got there — Mumbai to Manguluru by train. Then drove to Madikeri/ Virajpet.
Tip — Carry an umbrella! :)
